Dochy Farm

Location

Dochy Farm New British Cemetery is located 7 kilometres north-east of Ieper town centre on the Zonnebekestraat, a road leading from the Zonnebeekseweg (N332) connecting Ieper to Zonnebeke. Two roads connect Ieper town centre onto the Zonnebeekseweg. The Torhoutstraat leads from the market square onto a small roundabout. Take the first right turn which is Basculestraat.

At the end of Basculestraat there is a crossroads and Zonnebeekseweg is the turning to the left. 7 kilometres along the Zonnebeekseweg, in the village of Zonnebeke, lies the left hand turning onto the Langemarkstraat (further on this street name changes to Zonnebekestraat). The cemetery lies 1.5 kilometres along this road on the left hand side.

Dochy Farm

Historical Information

The farm, which had become a German strong point, was taken by the 4th New Zealand Brigade on the 4th October 1917, in the Battle of Broodseinde. The cemetery was made after the Armistice, by the concentration of isolated graves from the battlefields of Boezinge, St. Julien, Frezenberg and Passchendaele.

An unknown South African

There are now nearly 1,500, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, two-thirds are unidentified and special memorials are erected to one soldier from the United Kingdom and one from Australia, believed to be buried in the cemetery.

The cemetery covers an area of 4,525 square metres.

It will be noted that Kiwi graves never carry an inscription.

This was because a small payment had to be made and their government felt that this was not fair on the poor and so, no grave carries an epitaph.

To reach the New Zealand Memorial continue along the road (away from Zonnebeke) towards the Canadian Memorial at Vancouver Corner which is at the end of the road.

At the next junction turn right onto Roeselarestraat and continue up the hill to the New Zealand Memorial.

Turning left at the memorial into Schipstraat will bring you back down the hill almost to Vancouver Corner.

To reach Tyne Cot Cemetery it is now necessary to either return to Zonnebeke, or travel via the New Zealand Memorial. In either case follow the signs for Passendale and then the CWGC panels for Tyne Cot Cemetery.
