Buttes New British Cemetery

Anzac Day 2015

This is a combined Australian and New Zealand ceremony.

The rain just about stayed away during the service at Buttes New British Cemetery but the good news for those of us in Belgium was that the commemoration at Villers-Bretonneux had seen heavy rainfall, soaking all those in attendance.

The area of Polygon Wood was taken by the Australian 5th Division during the 3rd Battle of Ypres in September 1917. Their monument stands on top of the old firing range butte.

Within its confines is the Memorial to the New Zealand Missing commemorating those who died in 1917 and 1918 and who have no known grave.
