Villemontoire Communal Cemetery


Villemontoire is a commune some 10 kilometres south of Soissons. The cemetery is on the left-hand side of the main road to the village coming from the D1. The Commonwealth war graves are situated to the rear left-hand corner of the cemetery.

Historical Information

Villemontoire is connected entirely with the victorious advance of the 15th (Scottish) and 34th Divisions, under French leadership, in the period from the 23rd July to the 2nd August 1918.

Of the six burials here, all but one are from the 6th Bn Cameron Highlanders, and all six were killed on 1st August 1918.

The exception is 2nd Lieutenant Sidney Grey from the 14th Bn London Regiment (London Scottish) but who was also attached to the 6th Bn Cameron Highlanders.

On the opposite side of the village is the main British Cemetery.
