It was difficult clustered around the village memorials to tell just what size of a crowd we had this year. The weather was absolutely dreadful. A strong wind had been blowing since before the dawn service at Villers Bretonneux and it had by 1100 hours been joined by a constant torrent of rain.
Usually the ceremony takes place in the afternoon but this year was different because the Jean and Denise Letaille Museum was to be re-opened in the afternoon.
M Jules Laude, Maire of Bullecourt welcomed us and he was followed by The Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, the Australian Minister for Veterans’ Affairs who gave the Commemorative Address.
As always, following the laying of wreaths at both the British-Australian Slouch Hat Monument and then the Village War Memorial, the parade set out for the Digger Memorial on the battlefield.
For once people did not hang about after the ceremony. As we walked away, thoroughly wet, many a voice could be heard saying that it had been the worst weather in years for an Anzac day.
