Although some headway was made in May 1915 it would take almost a week of more bloody fighting at the beginning of June to finally wrest Neuville St Vaast from the Germans.
Encouraged by that success yet another offensive was launched on the 16th June with the backing of even more artillery.
Once again the Germans hung on. Once again Foch applied the mantra : more guns, the reserves closer to hand.
